Self Closing Safety Gates are seen as crucial in the safe access and egress to ladders at roof level, and in providing a reliable option in protecting from hazards such as stairs, pits and harmful materials at ground level. Although older methods existed, such as chains and bars, these methods could not be depended on as quite often they were not replaced to their original position, ensuring that an opening to a potential hazard now existed.
Industrial Safety Gates
The idea of Self Closing Safety Gates is that they do what their name would suggest, eliminating the chance of human error. It is human error that causes the majority of all workplace accidents. And in a lot of cases, the error is not made by the victim themselves, but rather by someone else in their vicinity, or who was in the area before them. Accidents do happen. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that we keep these accidents to a minimum. We do this by taking the necessary precautions.
So why should self closing safety gates be installed?
1. They are more reliable than traditional methods:
As noted, there are alternatives. But these alternatives are not reliable, as they depend on the individual replacing them appropriately after passing through. Even when a chain or bar are replaced correctly, they do not fill the entire void effectively, creating an inconsistency in a guardrail or safety barrier system.
2. They provide permanent protection:
Operating on a spring mechanism, no sooner has a worker passed through the gap, than the gate has closed instantly behind them. There is never an opportunity for the following worker to fall through, which ensures permanent protection and eliminates the risk.
3. Cutting down on human error:
We all get caught up in our work, concentrating on what needs to be done. This goes for all industries, and nature of work. A lot of times we become oblivious to what is going on around us, as we focus on getting the job done. This can ultimately lead to complacently. Complacently also occurs when we complete the same tasks day in, day out. The correct safety procedures can be forgotten, and an accident can occur. With the gates filling the void full time, the chance of human error is in this case eradicated.
4. Self Closing Safety Gates meet international standards:
Including EN 14122 Part 3 & Part 4 and EN 13374 Class A. The gates have gone through full testing to ensure that they meet the relevant standards, including being tested to withstand 50,000 closes without failure. Can withstand loads of up to 225kg
5. Quick and easy to install:
Installation is simple, the gates are held by two u-brackets to the existing structure, be that a single post, handrail or guardrail upright. Usually 1 metre in standard size, the 33.7mm diameter tube ensures that they gate, while being light, is extreme durable. If the gate needs to be cut, simply remove the frame from the 90° elbow fittings, cut to the desired width, and connect back to the fittings by tightening the grub screw.
6. CE marked to EN 1090:
En 1090 refers to the European standards which regulate the construction of steel and aluminium structures, which ensure that all steel connections are of high quality.
7. Minimize accidents and save lives:
The most important reason for their installation. In 2014 and 2015, there were 55 workplace fatalities recorded by the HSA in each year. There were 46 fatalities in 2013. Clearly the necessary safety precautions are still not being taken, as the rising fatality figures would suggest. The safety gates are one such precaution which will eliminate hazards and protect employees.
8. Peace of mind for the Employer:
The Employer ensures that the void in a safety system is always filled, regardless of how many times employees will pass through throughout the day. This leads to peace of mind, it is the employers responsibility to ensure that their workers can go about their everyday duties without being put in harms way.
Where can the Self Closing Safety Gates be used?
They can be used in both external and internal applications and in many different industries, to fit in safety systems such as:
Also can be attached to single posts and other solid structures.
