The following video clip was passed around our offices today. It’s pretty scary viewing, but the outcome could obviously have been a whole lot worse. Spoiler Alert: No workers were seriously harmed in the making of this video.

The two guys on the platform obviously had no idea what was coming.
They had no idea when putting on their harnesses on that particular occasion that they would end up probably saving their lives. At the very least, they were saved from certain serious injuries. More often than not, you will never need to depend on your safety harness. Things will go as planned, and you will complete the work without incident. But as can be seen from the clip, things can go very wrong very quickly. I have tried to count the time that it takes from the moment the beam starts moving, to when the two men are being help by their safety equipment. It seems to be approximately 2-3 seconds.
The majority of construction workers work 9 hours a day. Well at least I used to work 9 hours a day when I was on the roofs(my boss used to claim that I only actually worked for half this time…). Either way, 2-3 seconds goes into 9 hours a hell of a lot. And as we can see, it can only take one slip. One moment of carelessness. One moment of dropping your guard.
Just wearing your personal fall prevention equipment is not enough either. Care should be taken when putting it on to ensure that it is being worn correctly. The following video demonstrates how to put on a Miller Duraplex Harness correctly:
