The very best of luck to Paul Kelly and Enda Murray of Team Skyway who are currently competing in one of the world’s toughest endurance events, the ‘Race around Ireland’. The race is a non-stop, ultra-distance cycling event where the cyclists can either compete in teams or as individuals as they take on this gruelling challenge.
Track each team’s progress here: Race around Ireland-blackblox as they tackle the gruelling circuit.
Or follow the guys on their Facebook page: Team Ireland-Race around Ireland 2015
As the race is non-stop, some of the competitors spend up to 22 hours on their bikes, often only getting a few hours of sleep before they get up and go again. The course lasts over 2,200 km across some of Ireland’s largest mountains. Obviously the cyclist’s need a good team around them to not only organise whatever is needed, but also to monitor the cyclists and ensure their safety.
Team Skyway are no different and their crew is headed up by James ‘Seamus’ Smith, himself no stranger to the saddle. James was a solo finisher himself in 2014, so he knows what it takes to complete such a challenging event. Who better to have on hand to assist the lads this time around!
The team’s nominated charity is the Attracta Doherty Pink n’ Gold fund, which was set up in memory of Attracta Doherty, a former Cancer patient. The courage and determination shown by the cyclists in the ‘Race around Ireland’ event is a fitting tribute to Attracta and others in her situation who have battled against this awful disease.
The main aim of the fundraising is ‘to assist Cancer patients and their families, through the funding of chosen charities who provide patient care and comfort’.
All of us here at Skyway would like to take this opportunity to wish all the cyclists and their teams the best of luck over the coming days, along with a safe journey to the finish line and a quick recovery.
